Harmonica Almanac – March 17

Country music pioneer Pappy Gube Beaver was born on this day in 1919. Beaver plated guitar, harmonica and sang and had a recording with Capitol records in the 1940’s. He later devoted himself to playing Country Gospel music.

Folk-Rock icon John B. Sebastian Jr. played the guitar and harmonica in the group, The Lovin’ Spoonful as well as writing most of their hit material and singing the lead vocals. Sebastian is also the harmonica player on the Doors hit, “Roadhouse Blues. John was born on this day in 1944.

Blues drummer and harmonica player Lester Davenport died on this day in 2009. Davenport began playing the harmonica at the age of five and after moving to Chicago in 1946 he took lessons from Snooky Pryor. He played with Bo Diddley, The Kinsey Report as well as recording as a solo artist.
